Mercedes-Benz GLB spy shots add credence to rumours that the brand plans to expand its range of crossover vehicles. Nothing is confirmed, but a fresh model looks likely to sit above the GLA. The GLA is a crossover too – so it blends hatchback treating and running costs with chunky, off-road, looks – and is fairly compact.
For comparison, the GLA – which shares components with the Mercedes-Benz A-Class – measures Four,417mm long, by 1,804mm broad, by 1,494mm tall. It is slightly longer than a Ford Concentrate Hatchback (2016). The Mercedes has five seats, five doors, comes with front or 4-wheel-drive, has a 481-litre cargo capacity and costs from £25,260.
The Mercedes-Benz GLB has an existing big brother too. The GLC – which is based on the Mercedes-Benz C-Class – measures Four,656mm long, 1,890mm broad and 1,639mm tall so is slightly longer than a Ford Concentrate Estate (2016). Every GLC has five seats, five doors, a 550-litre cargo capacity plus 4-wheel-drive. Prices commence from £34,950.
On this basis, the GLB – which rumours suggest is based on the Mercedes-Benz B-Class – fills the gap inbetween the GLA and GLC. It is likely to have front wheel-drive in most forms, with all-wheel on high-spec versions. It is also reasonable to assume that outward proportions and cargo capacity sit inbetween its bedfellows.
Engines and spectacle
The A-Class and GLA share certain engines – as do the C-Class and GLC – so the brand might stick to this pattern and equip the GLB with power plants from the B-Class. Current options include the: 1,595cc 122hp petrol, 1.595cc 156hp petrol, 1.461cc 109hp diesel, Two.143cc 136hp diesel, Two.143cc 177hp diesel; and the fully electrical.
When fitted to the B-Class of 2016, the petrol and diesel engines average inbetween 47.9mpg and 70.6mpg, carbon emission vary from 104g/km to 132g/km, and they take inbetween 7.6 and 11.9 seconds to propel motorists to 62mph. The electrified engine, in contrast, hits 62mph in 7.9 seconds and its range is one hundred twenty four miles per-charge (up to).
Exterior styling
Mercedes-Benz GLB spy shots suggest it has a very large front grille, flared wheel arches, multi-contoured bonnet and muscular position. Acute contour lines begin at the edge of the headlamps, budge rearwards along the wings, proceed underneath the front door treats, then slide lower and stop close to the rear doors treats.
Availability and price
The Mercedes-Benz GLB looks set to launch in 2019, rumours hint. Naturally, the kicking off price is likely to be inbetween the GLA and GLC. As of the current rates, a mid-point is approximately £30,000.
