Startled neighbours had a rude awakening when an out-of-control car ploughed through their gardens in the early hours of the morning.

Families in Netherhill Road, in the Gallowhill area of Paisley , woke up to find the vehicle on its roof following the 6.30am smash.

Miraculously the driver and his passenger were able to walk away from the upturned wreckage.

One woman, who asked not to be named, exposed that a row of bushes were all that stopped the car ploughing into her neighbour’s house.

She said: “We were woken up by the bang, very first of all, then we looked out and eyed the car flipped over in the next garden.

“It looked to me like they had been going too rapid and lost control.

“They came over the grass next door, through my pine bushes and ended up with the car on its roof in the next garden.

“I actually think the bushes stopped the car going right into the house. They slowed it down.”

Albeit the accident happened after sunrise on Friday morning, worried mum-of-four, Tricia Barton-Crawford, has complained to Renfrewshire Council about lights being out at the junction with Dundonald Road.

The 36-year-old mum-of-four believes the accident highlights just how dangerous the junction can be in daylight, nevermind in total darkness.

She told the Paisley Daily Express : “These lights have been a real concern for local families for months because they’ve been flickering on and off.

“When one goes out, it seems to knock out another duo beside it, which shouldn’t be the case.

“My spouse raised it at a community council meeting back in January and residents have been complaining about the lighting since.

“However, on Wednesday the lights all went out and the street was left in total darkness.

“Then we woke up on Friday morning to find a car on its roof across the street at the junction.

“The lights being out wasn’t the cause of the crash, but it won’t help drivers at night when it’s pitch black, that’s for sure.”

She added: “It’s not just the dangers of traffic. My elderly neighbour is startled to walk her dog at night because it’s so dark.

“If something happens in the street, no-one could help the police because we wouldn’t have been able to see anything.

“The council needs to act and sort the problem out.”

A Renfrewshire Council spokesman said: “The very first record we have of a fault being reported is on May 9.

“We were out examining these lamps yesterday and are treating this as a priority.

“It shows up there is a cable fault and we will aim to resolve that as soon as possible.”

A Police Scotland spokesman yesterday said a 45-year-old man had been reported to the Procurator Fiscal in connection with several road traffic offences.
