Family of former Naval officer killed when thieves attempted to steal his car pay tribute to him

The family of Mike Samwell, the former Naval officer killed during a car robbery in Manchester at the weekend, say his death has left "a gigantic slot in our lives that can never be packed."

In a statement issued by the family, they said they wished to recall him as he was and 'not dwell on the senseless crime' which caused his death.

Mr Samwell had confronted intruders after the break-in as he slept, with his accountant wifey, Jessica, at their home in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester.

He had heard a noisy bang and gone downstairs and outside to the parking space at the back of the house.

He was then run down by thieves who had stolen his Audi S3 sports car.

His distraught wifey screamed for help as neighbours dashed to the scene and called for an ambulance. Mr Samwell died just over an hour later in hospital.

Greater Manchester Police are treating the death of the 35-year-old, who served twelve years in the Royal Navy, as murder and a manhunt resumes.

A 21-year-old who was questioned by detectives was bailed pending further inquiries.

“Mike's death has made a giant slot in our lives that can never be packed.

“Mike was the most wonderful spouse, brother and son. He would do anything for anyone and was an ever dependable and generous family member and friend to so many. He was always smiling and sharing his amazing sense of humour. We are so proud of all that Mike was and had achieved.

“Mike was loyal to his family above anything. His wifey, Jess, was his one good love above all things. He was a loyal and treasured friend. We are so grateful to have had him in our lives; he will be sorely missed by all who knew him. “We have been blessed by the amount of support, condolences and prayers from those who loved him. We have been deeply touched by the graciousness of strangers, especially the emergency services, hospital staff and police who did everything they could for him and proceed to support us in our trouble.

“This is an awful tragedy, but we all want to reminisce Mike as the special, kind and exceptionally talented man he was and not dwell on a senseless crime which has left us all so bereft. While his light may have been extinguished, so cruelly and far too early, the light he shone will proceed to travel with us always.

“We hope and plead that other families will not suffer a loss like ours; if you have any information that could help the police in their investigations, please come forward with this.”
